Custom Domain for QR Codes and Short Links

Put your QR codes and short links on a custom domain, such as qr.yourbrand.com. People see your brand in the link before they open it, which builds trust on posters, packaging and business cards.

  • Ownership verified with a DNS TXT record
  • HTTPS set up by our team after verification
  • Choose the domain for each short link

What is a custom domain for QR codes?

Every dynamic QR code contains a short link. By default that link uses our domain. With a custom domain, the short link uses a domain you own instead – usually a short subdomain of your website, such as qr.yourbrand.com or go.yourbrand.com.

Nothing else changes: the code still opens your content, you can still edit the destination after printing, and every scan still appears in your statistics. The difference is what people see when their camera shows the link preview, and whose name is printed next to the code.

Custom domains work for short links on their own, too. If you share links in emails, social posts or text messages, a branded short link looks consistent with the rest of your communication.

How to connect your custom domain

You need access to your domain's DNS settings – usually at your domain registrar or hosting provider.

  1. Choose a subdomain

Pick something short and clear, like qr.yourbrand.com. A subdomain keeps your main website untouched.

  2. Add it to your workspace

Enter the domain in the domain settings of your dashboard. You receive a unique verification code.

  3. Create the DNS TXT record

Add a TXT record with the name and value shown in your dashboard, then click verify. DNS changes can take a while to spread, so try again later if it is not found at first.

  4. We set up HTTPS

Once ownership is verified, our team sets up HTTPS for the domain. When it is active, choose it for new short links and QR codes.

Why branded short links matter

A link is a small promise about where someone is going. Your own domain makes that promise easy to read.

More trust at the moment of scanning

Phone cameras show the link before opening it. A domain that matches the brand on the poster or package reassures people that the code is genuine, instead of leaving them to wonder about an unfamiliar address.

  • Your name in the preview
  • Consistent with your website and emails

Your brand on every printed piece

When the link is printed under the code or shared as text, it advertises your brand instead of a third-party service. Agencies can connect domains for their clients so each campaign carries the right name.

  • Readable links for print and social
  • Custom slugs such as /spring or /menu

Same analytics and control

Links on your domain behave like any other dynamic link: edit the destination, switch codes on or off and follow the scans in QR code analytics.

  • Editable destinations
  • Draft, active, inactive and archived
  • Scan charts by time and location

Default domain or your own domain?

Both work reliably. A custom domain adds your brand and a little setup.

Custom domains and QR code phishing

QR code phishing – often called quishing – uses fake codes to send people to look-alike login or payment pages. Many people have learned to hesitate when a code opens an address they do not recognize.

A branded domain helps honest codes stand out. When the preview shows your own domain, people can match it with the name on the sign, and staff can tell customers exactly which address to expect. It does not stop someone from sticking a fake code over yours, so check public codes regularly. Our QR code security guide has more practical advice.

Your domain stays yours

The domain belongs to you and stays in your DNS. That means the address printed on your materials carries your name, not ours, and you keep control over the DNS records for that domain.

Be aware of what that does and does not mean. While you use Qdestera, the domain points to our service, and dynamic links on it work as long as your account and plan are active. If you ever decide to change providers, you would need to recreate the same links elsewhere – but the printed address would still be yours to point wherever you choose.

Tips for choosing and running a custom domain

  • Keep it short

Short subdomains such as qr., go. or scan. are easy to read in a link preview and on print.

  • Use a subdomain, not your main site

A dedicated subdomain keeps your website and email settings separate from your short links.

  • Make sure you have DNS access

Ask your IT team or agency who manages the DNS before you start, so verification does not stall.

  • Wait for HTTPS before printing

Only print codes on the new domain after it shows as active in your dashboard, and test a scan first.

  • Plan the number of domains

How many domains you can connect depends on your plan. See pricing for the current limits.

What the domain statuses mean

Your dashboard shows where each domain is in the process, so you always know when it is safe to print.

Waiting for verification

The domain is added, but the TXT record has not been found yet. Check the record and try again once DNS has updated.

Verified

Ownership is confirmed. Our team now prepares HTTPS for the domain.

Active

HTTPS is in place and the domain is ready. Select it when you create short links and QR codes.

Who benefits most from a custom domain

Brands with lots of print

Packaging, catalogs and store displays carry your name in every link.

Hotels and restaurants

Guests see the venue's name before opening a menu, a Wi-Fi page or a feedback form.

Companies with IT policies

Links on a company domain are easier to approve and explain to cautious employees and customers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Read our guides or contact us .

What is a custom domain for QR codes?

It is a domain you own, such as qr.yourbrand.com, used in the short link inside your dynamic QR codes instead of our default domain.

How do I verify my domain?

Add the domain in your dashboard, create the DNS TXT record shown there and click verify. Once the record is found, ownership is confirmed.

Do you provide SSL for my custom domain?

Yes. After your domain is verified, our team sets up HTTPS for it. The domain becomes active once that is done.

How many custom domains can I add?

It depends on your plan. You can see the limits for each plan on the pricing page.

Can I use my main website domain?

We recommend a subdomain such as qr.yourbrand.com, so your website and email settings on the main domain are not affected.

Do existing QR codes change when I add a domain?

No. Codes you already printed keep their current link. Choose the custom domain for new short links and QR codes.

Does a custom domain protect against QR code phishing?

It helps people recognize your genuine codes, because the link preview shows your own name. It cannot stop someone from covering your code with a fake one.

Can I use a custom domain for short links without a QR code?

Yes. Short links on your domain can be shared anywhere – in emails, social posts or text messages.

How long does domain verification take?

It depends on how quickly your DNS change spreads. If the TXT record is not found at first, wait a little and click verify again.
