PDF Menu QR Code: Start Today, Upgrade Later
Already have your menu as a PDF? A PDF menu QR code gets it onto every table today. When you want more than a file – languages, allergen filters, prices you change once – move to an interactive Qdestera menu and keep the PDF as a link inside it.
- Use the PDF you already have – no redesign needed
- Replace the file later without reprinting the QR code
- Import your dishes into an interactive menu, up to 500 at a time
Two ways to use a PDF menu QR code
Most restaurants start with the file they have. Pick the route that fits where you are today.
Quick start: upload the PDF you already have
If a file is all you need, create a PDF QR code: guests scan it and the PDF opens in their phone's browser. If you use Qdestera Menu, you can also upload a PDF of up to 20 MB to your digital menu. Guests then find a “PDF menu” link at the bottom of the menu – handy for a wine list, a group menu or a printable version.
Next step: an interactive menu
An interactive QR code menu is built from dishes, not pages. Guests pick their language, filter by allergens and diet, and see the price you changed five minutes ago. You can import your dishes from text instead of retyping them, and keep the PDF as a download link. Planning to go interactive anyway? Print your Qdestera menu's QR code from the start, so there is only one set of codes on your tables.
How to create a PDF menu QR code
You need a PDF, an account and about five minutes.
-
Prepare the PDF
Export your menu in portrait format with large, readable text. Compress the photos so the file opens quickly on mobile data.
-
Upload it
Create a dynamic PDF QR code and upload the file, or attach the PDF to your Qdestera menu under the menu settings.
-
Download and print the QR code
Download PNG, SVG, JPG or PDF, add your logo and a frame with “Scan for the menu”, and place it on tables, the window and the counter.
PDF menu or interactive menu on a phone?
Both work behind a QR code. The difference shows up once a guest holds the menu in one hand.
| PDF menu | Interactive Qdestera menu | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens from a QR code without an app | Yes | Yes |
| Uses the file you already have | Yes | No |
| Readable without pinch-zoom | No | Yes |
| Guest chooses the language | No | Yes |
| Change one price without editing a file | No | Yes |
| Allergen icons and diet filters | No | Yes |
| Search and category navigation | No | Yes |
| Order and call the waiter from the table | No | Yes |
| See which dishes guests look at | No | Yes |
Why an interactive menu beats a PDF on phones
A PDF is a printed page squeezed onto a small screen. Guests pinch, zoom and scroll sideways to read a price, and a large file can take a while to load on a weak connection. An interactive menu is laid out for the phone: category chips at the top, readable text, photos in a compressed format that load as the guest scrolls.
Languages. A PDF shows one language, or every language crammed onto one page. A multilingual menu opens in the guest's language, with the menu interface built in for seven languages and AI translation suggestions for your dishes.
Prices you change once. With a PDF, one new price means editing the design file, exporting and uploading again. In an interactive menu you change the number and every table sees it at the next scan. Timed happy-hour discounts even show the old price crossed out.
Allergens and filters. A PDF can list allergens, but guests cannot filter them. An allergen menu lets guests hide dishes with the allergens they avoid, or show only vegan, halal or gluten-free options.
Ordering. A PDF ends at reading. With the ordering add-on, guests order, call the waiter or ask for the bill from the same menu, and you see which dishes they viewed and ordered.
Move from PDF to an interactive menu without retyping
Qdestera does not convert a PDF automatically, but it gets you most of the way. Copy the text out of your PDF, tidy it into a simple format – a line starting with “#” for each section, then one line per dish with name, price and description separated by “|” – and paste it into the import. Up to 500 items go in at once.
If you already used Qdestera's older text menu, you can import it directly and point the existing menu QR code to the new menu, so the printed code keeps working. Then add photos, allergens and translations at your own pace, pick a theme from the digital menu templates and keep the original PDF as a download link in the menu footer.
Tips if you keep a PDF menu
-
Keep the file small
The upload limit is 20 MB, but guests on mobile data will thank you for a much smaller file. Compress photos before exporting.
-
Design for portrait
Use one column, large type and strong contrast. Landscape spreads are hard to read on a phone.
-
Use a dynamic QR code
A dynamic QR code lets you replace the PDF when prices change, without printing new codes.
-
Name the file clearly
Guests see the file name when they download it. “Dinner-menu.pdf” beats “final_v7_print.pdf”.
-
Test on two phones
Scan with an iPhone and an Android phone on mobile data before you put the codes on every table.
Compare it with a live interactive menu
Open the demo on your phone, switch the theme and language, and see what your PDF could become.
How do I make a QR code for my PDF menu?
Create a dynamic PDF QR code, upload your menu file and download the QR code as PNG, SVG, JPG or PDF. Guests scan it and the PDF opens in their browser.
How large can my PDF menu be?
In Qdestera Menu you can upload a PDF of up to 20 MB. A smaller file opens faster on guests' phones, so compress images before you export.
Can I replace the PDF without changing the QR code?
Yes. The QR code points to a short link, so you upload the new file and the printed code opens it at the next scan.
Can Qdestera convert my PDF into an interactive menu?
Not automatically. Copy the text from your PDF, format it as sections and dishes and paste it into the import – up to 500 items at once.
Can I use a PDF and an interactive menu together?
Yes. Upload the PDF to your Qdestera menu and guests find it as a “PDF menu” link at the bottom of the interactive menu.
Do guests need an app to open a PDF menu?
No. Modern iPhone and Android phones read QR codes with the camera and open the PDF in the browser.
Is a PDF menu good enough?
For a short menu that rarely changes, often yes. If you change prices often, serve guests in several languages or want allergen filters and ordering, an interactive menu saves time.
Can I have my PDF menu in several languages?
You would need a separate PDF per language. An interactive menu shows each guest their own language from one menu.
