Dynamic QR Code Generator: Edit and Track After Printing

Our dynamic QR code generator creates codes you can change after they are printed. The code holds a short link, so you update the destination, pause the code or check its scans from your dashboard – while the printed code stays exactly the same.

  • Change the link or content without reprinting
  • Scan analytics by day, operating system, country and city
  • Draft, active, inactive and archived statuses

What is a dynamic QR code?

A dynamic QR code does not store your content directly. It stores a short link that belongs to your account. When someone scans the code, the short link looks up where it should go right now and sends the visitor there – a website, a PDF, a menu, a contact page or any of the 17 dynamic content types.

Because the pattern only encodes the short link, you can edit everything behind it later. Replace a link, upload a new PDF, fix a typo in a contact page or point a campaign code to next season's offer: the printed code keeps working and nobody needs a new sticker, flyer or package.

That is why people also call it an editable QR code or a trackable QR code. Every scan passes through the short link, so each one is counted and shows up in your statistics.

How to create a dynamic QR code

You need a free account, because the short link and its settings are stored in your workspace.

  1. Sign up for free

Create an account with email, Google or Microsoft. The free plan needs no credit card; plan limits apply to the number of codes and features.

  2. Choose a type and add content

Pick a website link, PDF, vCard, menu, event or another dynamic type. Add the destination or upload the file, and optionally set your own slug for the short link.

  3. Design the code

Set colors or a gradient, module and eye styles, a frame with a call to action and your logo. See QR codes with a logo for design tips that keep codes scannable.

  4. Download, print and edit any time

Download PNG, SVG, JPG or PDF. When something changes, edit the content in your dashboard – the code you printed does not change.

Static vs dynamic QR code: side by side

Both kinds scan with any phone camera. The difference is what sits inside the code and what you can still do after printing.

What you can do after the code is printed

A dynamic code is a small piece of infrastructure you control. These are the things you will use most.

Change the destination whenever you need

Open the code in your dashboard and edit its content. Scanners see the new version on their next scan – no new print run, no outdated flyers.

  • Swap a URL, file or hosted page
  • Set an expiry date on the short link
  • Organize codes in folders and favorites

See how each code performs

Scans are counted per code and per link. Follow them day by day, compare weekdays and months, and see the operating systems, countries and cities behind them. Read more on QR code analytics.

  • Ranges from today up to one year
  • Per-code 30-day chart
  • Top codes and recent scans

Use your own domain

Show your brand in the short link instead of ours. Connect a custom domain, verify it with a DNS TXT record and our team sets up HTTPS for it.

  • Branded links people recognize
  • Number of domains depends on your plan

Four statuses keep every code under control

Each dynamic code has a status, so you decide exactly when it is live.

Draft

Prepare a code before a launch. Drafts are visible only in your dashboard and do not open anything when scanned.

Active

The code is live and sends every scan to its current destination.

Inactive

Pause a code temporarily – for example after a campaign or during a menu update. Scanners see an inactive notice instead of your content, and you can switch it back on at any time.

Archived

Retire a code you no longer need. It leaves your default lists and no longer opens anything when scanned, so your dashboard stays tidy.

Where dynamic QR codes pay off

Anything that is expensive to reprint or stays in place for months is a good candidate.

Restaurant menus

Update prices and dishes behind a QR code menu without touching the table cards.

Packaging and labels

Point a code on thousands of printed boxes to a new manual, video or offer long after production.

Signs and real estate

Reuse the same sign for the next listing by changing the page behind it.

Campaigns and print ads

Measure how many people scanned a poster or flyer and switch the offer when the campaign ends.

Business cards

Keep a contact page up to date after a new job title or phone number.

Do dynamic QR codes expire?

Here is the honest answer. Static codes never expire: the content is inside the pattern, so they keep working even if you never visit our site again. You can create them with our free generator without an account.

Dynamic codes depend on our service. They keep working as long as your account is active and your plan includes them. The short link has to be resolved by our servers, so a dynamic code cannot outlive the account it belongs to. You can also give a code an end date on purpose by setting an expiry date on its short link or switching it to inactive.

Our advice: use static codes for things that must work forever and never change, such as a Wi-Fi password at home. Use dynamic codes where editing, tracking and control matter more. A custom domain adds one more safeguard, because the printed link then carries your own domain name.

Tips for trackable QR codes that people scan

  • Name codes by placement

Create one code per poster, table or package line instead of sharing one code everywhere. Separate codes give you separate statistics.

  • Add a call to action

A frame with a short line such as “Scan for the menu” tells people what they get before they scan.

  • Test before printing

Scan with an iPhone and an Android phone, then check that the scans appear in your dashboard.

  • Keep contrast high

Dark code on a light background works on every camera, even with a logo in the middle.

  • Automate what happens next

Send an email or call a webhook on every scan of a code, a folder or the whole workspace.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Read our guides or contact us .

What is the difference between a static and a dynamic QR code?

A static QR code stores the content itself and can never be changed. A dynamic QR code stores a short link, so you can change the destination, see scans and pause the code after printing.

Can I edit a QR code after printing it?

Only if it is dynamic. Edit the content in your dashboard and the printed code opens the new version on the next scan.

Is the dynamic QR code generator free?

You can start on the free plan without a credit card. Plan limits apply to the number of codes and some features; paid plans add more.

Do dynamic QR codes expire?

They have no fixed lifetime, but they depend on our service: they keep working while your account and plan are active. Static codes never expire because the content is inside the code.

Can I track how many people scanned my QR code?

Yes. Every scan of a dynamic code is counted, with charts by day, weekday and month, plus operating systems, countries and cities.

Which content types can be dynamic?

Seventeen: URL, text, Wi-Fi, PDF, image, image gallery, vCard, video, MP3, coupon, app store, product, event, menu, feedback, email and SMS.

Can I turn a dynamic QR code off temporarily?

Yes. Set it to inactive and scanners see a notice instead of your content. Set it back to active whenever you are ready.

Do people need an app to scan a dynamic QR code?

No. They use the phone's built-in camera; the short link opens and forwards them to the current content. Visitors do not need an account or a download.

Can I create dynamic QR codes automatically?

Yes. The QR code API lets you create dynamic URL QR codes and manage existing codes from your own software.
