UTM Builder: Create Campaign URLs
Tag any link with UTM parameters so your analytics shows which campaign, channel and ad sent each visitor. Fill in the fields, copy the finished URL or use the QR code for print.
Your campaign URL and QR code appear here.
How to build a UTM link
A tagged campaign link takes less than a minute. All you need is the address of the page you want visitors to reach.
-
Paste your destination URL
Start with the full address of the page people should land on, including https://.
-
Fill in the UTM fields
Source, medium and campaign are the essentials. Term and content are optional and help you tell keywords or ad versions apart.
-
Copy the URL or take the QR code
Use the tagged link in emails, ads and posts, or the QR code on flyers, posters and packaging.
What each UTM parameter means
Each parameter answers one question. Analytics tools such as Google Analytics read them automatically when someone opens the link.
| Parameter | Question it answers | Example values |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Where did the visitor come from? | newsletter, instagram, flyer |
| utm_medium | What kind of channel was it? | email, social, cpc, qr |
| utm_campaign | Which campaign or promotion? | spring-sale-2026 |
| utm_term | Which keyword or audience? (optional) | running-shoes |
| utm_content | Which version or placement? (optional) | poster-a, button-top |
UTM naming conventions that keep reports clean
Most analytics tools treat UTM values as case-sensitive, so “Email” and “email” end up as two rows. A few habits prevent messy reports.
-
Use lower case only
Write facebook, not Facebook or FACEBOOK. It is the simplest rule and prevents most duplicates.
-
Replace spaces with hyphens
spring-sale reads well in reports, while spaces turn into %20 or + inside the URL.
-
Agree on a fixed list
Keep a shared list of allowed sources and mediums, so everyone on the team tags the same channel the same way.
-
Make campaign names specific
Include the offer and the period, such as summer-menu-2026, so you still recognize it a year later.
-
Keep values short
A few words per value is enough. Long tags make both the link and the QR code larger than they need to be.
-
Never tag internal links
UTM tags on links inside your own website overwrite the original source and break attribution.
UTM parameters for QR code campaigns
Visits from a printed QR code arrive without a referring website, so analytics tools often file them under direct traffic. A UTM tag fixes that. Set utm_medium=qr (or print) and name the source after where the code appears, for example utm_source=flyer or utm_source=shop-window.
Use utm_content to compare placements. Two posters in the same campaign, tagged poster-entrance and poster-checkout, show which spot drives more visits.
Tags make the link longer, and a longer link produces a denser code. Print a URL QR code with tagged links at a generous size, or keep the pattern small with a dynamic code.
Combine UTM tags with dynamic QR analytics
A dynamic QR code stores a short link that forwards to your tagged URL. QR code analytics show scans over time and by country, city and operating system, while your web analytics shows what visitors did next. Mistyped a tag? Fix it in the dashboard; the printed code stays the same. Our guide on how to track QR code scans explains the full setup.
Change UTM tags after printing
Create a dynamic QR code that forwards to your campaign URL and edit the destination whenever the campaign changes.
What is a UTM builder?
A tool that adds UTM parameters to a URL, so analytics tools can credit each visit to a source, medium and campaign. This one also gives you a QR code for the finished link.
Which UTM parameters are required?
Use utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign on every tagged link. utm_term and utm_content are optional.
What utm_medium should I use for a QR code?
Use qr or print and keep it identical across campaigns. Describe the physical placement in utm_source or utm_content instead.
Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?
In most analytics tools, yes. “Newsletter” and “newsletter” appear as separate sources, so stick to lower case.
Do UTM parameters affect SEO?
They only label visits for analytics. Make sure your landing page has a canonical tag pointing to the clean URL, so search engines don't index tagged copies.
Is the UTM builder free?
Yes. It is free and needs no account. Copy the link or the QR code and use them wherever you like.
Can I shorten a long UTM link?
Yes. With an account you can create a short link or a dynamic QR code that forwards to the tagged URL, with a custom slug if you want one.
Where do I see UTM results?
In your web analytics tool, usually in the acquisition reports by source, medium and campaign. Scan counts for dynamic QR codes appear in your Qdestera dashboard.
