QR Code Tracking and Scan Analytics

QR code tracking shows you what happens after the print run. Every scan of a dynamic code is counted, so you see when people scan, which operating systems they use, which countries and cities the scans come from and which codes perform best.

  • Scans over time: daily, by weekday and by month
  • Operating systems, countries and cities
  • Email or signed webhook on every scan

How QR code tracking works

A dynamic QR code contains a short link instead of the final destination. When someone scans it, the phone opens the short link first. At that moment the scan is recorded, and the visitor is sent on to your content without noticing any delay.

For each scan we record the time, the code and link that were scanned, the operating system reported by the phone and an approximate location based on the IP address. Those records feed the charts in your dashboard.

Static QR codes cannot be tracked this way. Their content sits inside the pattern, so the phone opens it directly and no server ever sees the scan. If you want numbers, create the code as dynamic from the start.

What your scan analytics dashboard shows

One screen for all codes, plus a detail chart for each code. Pick a range from today up to the last year.

Scans over time

Follow the daily trend to see the effect of a mailing, a trade fair or a new poster. The weekday view shows whether your audience scans more on Mondays or at the weekend, and the monthly view reveals seasons.

  • Today, 1 week, 1, 3 or 6 months, or 1 year
  • Daily trend, weekday and monthly breakdown
  • Filter by scan result

Where and on what scans happen

See the split between iOS, Android and other operating systems, and which countries and cities your scans come from. That helps you plan landing pages, languages and print locations.

  • Operating system breakdown
  • Countries and cities from the IP address
  • Location is approximate by nature

Top codes, links and recent scans

Rank your QR codes and short links by scans to spot the placements that work. The recent scans list shows the latest activity, and each code has its own 30-day chart on its detail page.

  • Top QR codes and top links
  • Recent scans with time and result
  • Per-code 30-day chart

Every report at a glance

These are the reports available today for dynamic QR codes and short links.

Report What it tells you
Daily scans How scans rise and fall across the selected range
Scans by weekday Which days your audience scans most
Scans by month Seasonal patterns over longer ranges
Operating systems The mix of iOS, Android and other systems
Countries Where scans come from, based on the IP address
Cities A closer, approximate view of scan locations
Top QR codes and links Which placements and campaigns perform best
Recent scans The latest scans with time, code, link and result
Per-code 30-day chart The recent history of one specific code

Scan automations: react to every scan

Charts tell you what happened. Automations let you act right away. Create a rule for the whole workspace, a folder or a single code, and choose what should happen on every scan: send an email or call a webhook.

Webhooks are signed with HMAC-SHA256, so your server can check that a request really came from Qdestera. Failed deliveries are retried, and a delivery log lists every delivery with its status. Developers can combine this with the QR code API to feed scans into a CRM, a spreadsheet tool or an internal dashboard.

Connect QR scans to Google Analytics with UTM parameters

Qdestera counts scans. What visitors do after they land on your website – reading, signing up, buying – is measured by your own web analytics. UTM parameters connect the two.

Add tags such as utm_source=qr and utm_campaign=spring-poster to the destination URL of your code. Your analytics tool then attributes those visits to the QR campaign. Our free UTM builder creates the tagged link for you.

Because the code is dynamic, you can add or change UTM tags after printing. If you forgot them on the first run, simply update the destination – the next scan carries the new tags.

Privacy and accuracy

Scan analytics describe your codes, not individual people. The dashboard counts scans; the same person scanning twice counts twice. Visitors do not need to sign in or install anything.

Location is estimated from the IP address of the scanning device, so it is approximate. Mobile networks, company networks and VPNs can place a scan in a nearby city or even another country. Treat city data as a trend, not an exact address.

Tips for scan numbers you can act on

For a full walkthrough, read our guide on how to track QR code scans.

  • One code per placement

Use separate codes for the window poster, the flyer and the packaging. A single shared code tells you how many scans, but not where they came from.

  • Name and group codes clearly

Names like “Poster – Main Street – May” and folders per campaign make the top-codes list easy to read.

  • Remember your test scans

Scans you make while testing are counted too. Test before launch and compare periods after it.

  • Compare equal ranges

Put one week against another week, or one month against another, rather than mixing ranges.

  • Tag the destination

Add UTM parameters so your web analytics can show what scanners did after they arrived.

Who uses QR code tracking

Anyone who prints codes and wants to know whether they work.

Restaurants and cafés

See which tables, windows or takeaway bags bring the most menu scans, and at which hours of the week guests scan.

Retail and packaging

Find out how many buyers open the manual or video on the box, and in which countries the product is being used.

Events and trade fairs

Compare the booth poster with the flyer and the badge, day by day, during and after the event.

Marketing teams and agencies

Report scans per campaign and placement, then decide where the next print budget goes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Read our guides or contact us .

How do I track QR code scans?

Create the code as a dynamic QR code. Every scan passes through its short link and appears in your analytics dashboard.

Can I track a static QR code?

No. A static code opens its content directly on the phone, so no scan data is ever sent. Only dynamic codes can be tracked.

What does QR code analytics show?

Scans over time (daily, by weekday and by month), operating systems, countries and cities, top QR codes and links, recent scans and a 30-day chart per code.

How accurate is the scan location?

Location comes from the IP address, so it is approximate. Countries are usually reliable; cities can be off because of mobile networks or VPNs.

Can I get notified when someone scans my QR code?

Yes. A scan automation sends an email or calls a signed webhook on every scan of a code, a folder or the whole workspace.

Can I see QR scans in Google Analytics?

Add UTM parameters to the destination URL, and your web analytics will attribute visits to the QR campaign. The UTM builder makes the link for you.

Which time ranges can I choose?

Today, the last week, the last 1, 3 or 6 months, or the last year.

Is QR code tracking free?

Scan analytics come with your account, and you can start on the free plan without a credit card. Plan limits apply to codes and features.

Can I see the scans of a single QR code?

Yes. Each code's detail page has its own 30-day chart, and the dashboard ranks your codes and links by scans.
